Wilton Real Estate

Wilton

First settled by the Proprietors of Norwalk, Wilton was given Parish status in 1725, but remained part of Norwalk. Although farmers settled the area, meeting houses were built and a town center was established, it was not until 1802 that Wilton was granted separate status. Growing as an agricultural community, shoemaking, carriage building and distilleries emerged. Wilton was one of the stops for the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. The early 1900´s brought commuters looking for summer homes, thus shifting the town away from agriculture. Wilton continued to grow by developer subdivisions, but many of the eighteenth and nineteenth century homes were preserved as was land for open space. Currently boasting a population of approximately 18,000, Wilton retains its rural feel while having easy access to southern and northern Fairfield County, New York City and beyond.
