It is served by an extensive system of highways, including Interstate 84, which connects to Interstates 684 and 287 and the Saw Mill River Parkway in New York State; Route 7 south connects Danbury to Interstate 95 and the Connecticut coastline. All of this helps make Danbury a "crossroads", a gateway both to New York as well as the rest of new England. The area boasts a growing mass transportation system which offers alternatives to the traveler. The Housatonic Area Regional Transit System's (HART) buses transport people throughout Danbury, as well as the surrounding towns and Metro North provides commuter rail service to southern Connecticut and New York from Danbury and all towns to the south. The areas transportation network will continue to expand and improve as long as people and financing are available to support it. Additionally, Danbury has a municipal airport which serves the general aviation user. This is a tower-controlled facility with two runways - 3250 feet and 4400 feet in length, and is one of the busiest general aviation airports in New England. Charter services and plane rentals are available, as well as hanger space for company owned aircraft. The New York metropolitan area airports of Kennedy, LaGuardia, Westchester, Newburgh and Newark are within easy travel time, and offer connections to the world. Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks is just ninety minutes away. Daily limousine service to all area airports is available. The region's location is superb from the perspective of freight movement throughout the east coast. The most populous region of the United States, from Portland Main, to Washington, D.C. is within one day service by motor freight. The Greater Danbury area is also served by rail freight service. Back to Top SHOPPING Numerous commercial centers surround the City of Danbury, and Downtown Danbury is a major center for retail shopping. Retail sales for the 10-town region are among the highest in the state , and annual increases reflect the area's continued growth and rising level of personal income. Each town in the Greater Danbury area has a commercial center, reflecting the size of the town itself. There are a variety of department stores and specialty shops, along with many banking offices throughout the 10-town region. Major supermarkets and independent grocery stores abound, and there are a multitude of eating and drinking establishments throughout the Greater Danbury area. The Danbury Fair Mall is located at the junction of Interstate 84 and Route 7 on Danbury's westside. It is the largest mall in New England with over 1.5 million square feet on 200 acres, encompassing more that 240 stores, including Filenes, Macy's, Sears, J.C. Penney, and Lord & Taylor. Adjacent to the Mall is Danbury Square, an additional concentration of major retail chain stores including Barnes & Noble. Between Ridgefield and New Milford, the area along Route 7 offers a wide range of shopping opportunities from clothing to antiques and from food to automobiles. There are several shopping plazas located on Federal Road, Mill Plain Road, Downtown Danbury and Route 6. The North Street Shopping Center is located at the junction of North Street and Route 37, on the way to New Fairfield. Back to Top MEDICAL FACILITIES Danbury Hospital is a fully accredited, non-profit, voluntary hospital, with 450 beds and 26 bassinets, this hospital serves all of the residents of the Greater Danbury area, as well as those in bordering New York State. Facilities and services include: linear accelerator, the most advanced tool for cancer therapy, Cardiac Catheterization, CAT Scanning, Renal Dialysis, nuclear medicine, a Coronary Care Unit, Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Unit, a Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and a 37 Clinic Outpatient Department. A recently completed Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center is the latest addition for detecting life-threatening diseases. Other services include a one-day surgery unit; an alternative for the patient whose surgery does not require an overnite stay, and an off-site Geriatric Health Center at 4 Liberty Street in cooperation with the Danbury Department of Health and the Danbury Visiting Nurse Association. The Hospital maintains a 24-hour, 7-day a week, Primary Care/Emergency Section. Also available are a 38-bed Psychiatric Unit, a 15-bed Detoxification Facility, a 26-bed Oncology Unit, a Cardiac Rehabilitation Gymnasium, and a 12-bed Physical Rehabilitation Unit, a specialized acute care Geriatric Unit serving the needs of the elderly and a newly renovated Neuroscience Unit, which serves medical and surgical patients with neurological problems. The Medical staff consists of 395 physicians and 75 dentists. There are 2,700 full and part-time employees with the assistance of 600 active senior and junior volunteers. Danbury Hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Yale University School of Medicine, New York Medical College and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. The Hospital also conducts an Emergency Medical Technician program with three fully accredited schools: Surgical Technologist School, Radiology Technologist School and Medical Technologist School. Stroock Tower at Danbury Hospital houses family-centered maternal and infant care, a comprehensive outpatient center with 37 medical, surgical, mental health and dental services, and a 24-hour community pharmacy. The hospital conducts scheduled health education programs which address a wide range of subjects and are open to the general public. The TEL-MED service includes a full listing of subjects on which anyone can obtain telephone information, or referral on health related subjects. Corporate Health Care, located at the hospital, is a separate facility which provides health care, preventative programs and maintenance plans tailored to meet specific needs of area businesses and their employees.
